The Village Choir

A community choir on Salt Spring Island, led by Maeve Iredale

We are a joyful, inclusive singing community. We don’t gather to perform, we gather to celebrate the healing, depth, and togetherness that singing in community can offer.

About

The Village Choir

The Village Choir is a community choir on Salt Spring Island led by Maeve Iredale. Our multigenerational circle is a welcoming space where people come together to experience connection, belonging, and the simple joy of singing in harmony.

Our repertoire draws from a variety of musical traditions, including folk, gospel, soul, trad and contemporary music. We sing everything from long form compositions to simple community choir chants, rounds and improvisational 'circle singing', weaving in lush, 3-part harmonies that are easy to learn by ear through the call and response style. We choose songs with uplifting and life-affirming lyrics that celebrate unity, healing, our connection to the Earth, and positive social change.

We sing for joy and not perfection! If you can talk, you can sing. All songs are taught by ear, no sheet music and no previous experience required. Come as you are.

FAQ

Good To Know

Do I need any singing experience?

Not at all. If you can talk, you can sing. All songs are taught by ear, no sheet music required.

What happens at the Big Sing?

It's a casual evening where we invite some friends to witness the songs we've worked on over the series, followed by a potluck. It's a celebration, not a performance.

Is this connected to a particular religion?

No. We're not affiliated with any religious or spiritual tradition. We gather to honour the experience of being alive and our shared humanity.
